NUS will have a new president by next year as current President – Professor Tan Chorh Chuan – takes on a senior position at Ministry of Health in 2018. Prof Tan, who joined NUS as a lecturer in the Department of Medicine in 1987, became the youngest dean at the age of 38 ten years later. Under his leadership, NUS rose in international standing. In the latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings released last September, NUS took the 24th spot, up two positions from the previous year. While serving his time at NUS, Prof Tan also received the Public Service Star award in 2003 for his role in leading the public health response to the SARS crisis in Singapore.
