Singapore's first and foremost medical school, the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine celebrates its 110th year of founding this year. Since its establishment on 3 July 1905, the School has remained faithful to its mission of educating and producing doctors for the nation. The School currently comprises 18 departments and 2 centres and covers a full spectrum of medical specialties. As the School marks its 110th year, its departments are also celebrating various anniversaries of their own.

NUS medical school sees more diverse student mix

A revamp in admissions has resulted in a better student mix at the National University of Singapore (NUS) Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. Since a new admission system which uses a series of interviews came into effect in 2013, the faculty has drawn more polytechnic graduates and students from a wider range of junior colleges.

Singapore team's discovery of new genomic aberrations of gastric cancer could pave the way for precision medicine

Singapore scientists from A*STAR’s Genome Institute of Singapore (GIS) and Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IMCB), together with colleagues from the National University Health System (NUHS) and Tan Tock Seng Hospital, have discovered a relationship between Asian gastric cancers and the fusion of two genes. The study, made possible through collaboration between GIS, IMCB, NUHS and Tan Tock Seng Hospital and support by A*STAR, showcased the importance of such collaborative efforts between researchers and clinicians.

HomeCare support takes flight

The NUS-mooted initiative—Tri-Generational HomeCare @ North West—which sees students providing holistic care to seniors through home visits, was launched by Guest-of-Honour Dr Teo Ho Pin, Mayor of North West District on 27 June at Republic Polytechnic. Teams of six to seven individuals, led by NUS students from the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine; the Department of Pharmacy; or the Department of Social Work, who also oversee secondary school students in the North West District, would be responsible for the physical, mental and social care of two to three seniors or households.

Clinical attire for medical students of NUS Medicine

Giving a unique identity to medical students while they interact with hospital staff and patients, the NUS Medicine medical students’ clinical attire will be launched in the Academic Year 2015/16. Medical students are trained to be an integral part of the healthcare team and are posted to all Restructured Hospitals in Singapore.
