Keynote Address 2013

Held on 26 September, the Keynote Address 2013 attracted over 200 students from the different medical faculties and schools in NUS. Delivering this year's Keynote was Mrs Tan Ching Yee, Permanent Secretary (Health), who provided the audience a thought-provoking and engaging speech. An insightful discussion between the five panelists and audience brought the event to an end. We look forward to Keynote Address 2014!

Team Medicine scores!

The Inter-Faculty Games (IFG) Champion’s trophy has once again returned to Team Medicine for 2013! Our students have done extremely well and emerged gloriously! A pat on everyone’s back for the excellent sportsmanship. The IFG is a much celebrated sporting event bringing together ten NUS Faculties in friendly competition for the coveted Tan Chorh Chuan Challenge Trophy.

Prof Barry Halliwell received top honours – President's Science and Technology Medal

Our heartiest congratulations to Professor Barry Halliwell and Dr Khor Chiea Chuen on being awarded the 2013 President's Science and Technology Awards! Professor Barry Halliwell was presented with the President's Science and Technology Medal, the highest of honours among the awards while Dr Khor received the 2013 Young Scientist Award for his research on genetics and heredity, particularly in eye-related traits and infectious disease.

Lee Hsien Loong Award for outstanding all-round achievement – Dr Benjamin Tan Yong Qiang

We are proud of Dr Benjamin Tan Yong Qiang, being the recipient of the Lee Hsien Loong Award for outstanding all-round achievement in 2013. Dr Tan achieved the delicate balance of excelling in his medical studies and maintaining an active participation in student-led activities; holding key leadership positions in the Medical Society and other initiatives.

NHS volunteers doubled since 2006

The Neighbourhood Health Screening (NHS) programme started in 2006, with 240 NUS medical student volunteering to give free health checks to poor and aged residents in selected area of Singapore. This year, 500 medical students took part in the scheme which has covered Taman Jurong, Macpherson and Bukit Merah. The outreach efforts were led by second-year medical students, Ke Yu He and Christopher Thng.

First prize for Team NUS Medicine at the 11th IMSPQ 2013

Kudos to the NUS team of five physiology students for returning as the grand champion of the 11th Inter-Medical School Physiology Quiz (IMSPQ)! Despite the tough competition from 85 teams representing universities all around the world, our medical students emerged as the winning team. Initiated in 2003, IMSPQ is a medical physiology quiz competition among first year medical students from universities around the world (mainly Asia).
